The shelf to me is where I place things I value most. Some of the items I keep on it are:
- My awards from high school. I feel silly keeping them since I’m in my thirties now but I can be quite the sentimentalist. They were from a time in my life just after my parents separated and I was happy for anything I managed.
- My favorite movies. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle to name some of them. Obviously I am quite the Studio Ghibli fan.
- Also various knickknacks I’ve collected over time. Ty beanie babies, my collector addition statue from Guild Wars 2 among other little statues, and an edition of the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga given to me by a friend.
- I also keep my books from college, even though I didn’t finish, it was still an enjoyable part of my life and a distraction when I was in a dark place. Some people keep telling me I should finish but I just can’t bring myself to remember the frame of mind I was in then.
The space upon the self has been growing also. I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing. I’ve been slowly cleaning out things from a time in my life I’d rather forget, from a person who abused and betrayed me.
It’s amazing to me how much it has changed in the last couple of years, almost as much as I have.
